The Dance of the Elements in Healthcare

- Lauren Goodell, MPT

I have been incorporating the Dance of the Elements in my work with patients. As a physical therapist I see a variety of patients who have sports injuries, back and shoulder injuries, and computer overuse injuries usually involving upper extremity nerve entrapments. The Elemental Dance activity has made profound impact to these peoples recovery process. I incorporate it into their treatment program with the following benefits in mind:

§ - - - - - - Movement is fun and painless.

§ - - - - - - Doing the 'Dance' is creative and new every time.

§ - - - - - - It requires collaboration with others - many times people in pain seek out isolation.

§ - - - - - - It feeds the system sensory and proprioceptive information, this lets the neurology self correct & update appropriately.

§ - - - - - - It engages the vestibular system thereby challenging and enhancing balance in a safe way.

§ - - - - - - Allows for an increase of awareness in how the body dynamically functions and what choices the person has habituated.

§ - - - - - - It encourages the person develop and explore new patterns of behavior.

§ - - - - - - It adds flexibility in to the body-mind.

§ - - - - - - Allows an increase of strength & endurance.
